People has inhabited Namibia for ages. The most ancient rock paintings
are dated 26000 years ago.
The most ancient tribes are Bushmen, Ovambo and Herero.
In 1488 Bartolomeo Diaz reached the Namibian coast, but the country
was colonised by Germany only in 1884.
During the Second World War Namibia was conquered by South Africa,
that controlled the country until the 1968, with many problems and
rebellions.
Namibia is now a democratic Republic gouverned by the SWAPO party.
The about 2 millions people are spreaded out in a very big area: the
75% are black and the half of them is infected by the HIV.
In Namibia there are many ethnic groups: Ovambo, Kavango, Herero,
Himba, Damara, Nama, Caprivians, San, Rehoboth Basters, Tswana and
Europeans.
The languages are Bantu and Khoisan, but many people speak English. |

Hereros are about 100.000, with different sub-groups.
Also Himba are in the Herero group.
Herero women wear colourful clothes, wich style comes from the
colonial period.
Hereros are farmers and shepherds, the cattle represents the biggest
richness for a village.
Many Herero live in the North, in Opuwo.

Himbas live in the North-East of the country
from the 16th century.
They aren't leaving their ancient costumes and jewels and life style.
Himbas are very beautiful, tall and slim and elegant.
Women and children have a mix of butter and red sand on their skin,
a way to be protected from the sun.
Women wear skirts madeof goat leather, many necklaces and bracelets
made of seeds, tin, small pieces of wood, leather.
We visited a couple of villages close to Opuwo, taking some presents,
like butter, sugar, salt, meat.
We gave the presents to the head of the village, so he gave us
the permission to going around taking pictures.
During the day in the villages there are only women, children and
old people: the boys and the men are in the fields and hills with
the cattle. |

Damaras were shepherd, but during the colonial
period they became farmers.
In 1960 the South African administration gave them an area called
"Damaraland".
Unfortunately that area was not good for farming and many Damaras
had to find a job in the farms of white people or in the towns.
Damaras wear western style clothes and use their traditional clothes
only in special occasions.
Damaras has got a very partucular language, made of clicks and
very strange sounds.
We met many Damaras in Khorixas.

Bushmen or San are the most ancient group.
They are hunters, able to live in a very difficult hambient: the
desert of Kalahari.
About 1500 years ago, the Bantu tribes conquered the lands of Bushmen
and 200 years ago arrived the Europeans.
Nowadays there are very few San and Bushmen tribes in Namibia and
Botswana.
Close to Marienbad there's a sort of reserve with a Bushman village.
You can stay there for a day and knowing their life and hunting
style. It's a way to save this culture from extinction.

Europeans are about 100 000, descending from
Germans and South Africans. The most part of them is involved in
farming, trading and tourism. I met some owners of restaurants,
resorts, travel agencies, shops.
Some of them told me the biggest difference between white and black
people is the way they look at the job and at the future.
For white people job is very important and it's the way to gaign
money, improve their life style and give more opportunities to their
children. Black people live in tribes wich means problems, money,
children education... everything is in common. Job is a way to gaign
money, but they think at the present and are not used to save money
for the future.
White people have more or less the control of the economy and many
black people work for them. |

|
| I think this explanation is quite simple, in truth the problem involves
the colonial past, the education system, the gouvernment politics
and many other things. But the situation in Namibia is much more better
than many other countries in Africa. |
