NAMIBIA - Cities

Windhoek is a small capital, with a population of only 160,000.
The city centre is characterised by a mix of German colonial structures and pastel-coloured modern buildings.

There's some shop of souvenir and art from every place in the country.

Windhoek is more or less in the middle of Namibia and has got an international airport so it's usually the place where starting a trip.

The Tourist Information is right in the town centre and very useful. Some places like Sossusvlei restcamp or Terrace Bay Restcamp in the Skeleton Coast can be reserved from here.

Swakopmund is the third town with 22,000 people and it was my favourite.
Situated on the Atlantic Ocean, in December and January is the most touristic place in the country: many people come here on vacation.

In fact Swakopmund looks like many touristic town by the sea, with the main streets bordered by palms, many hotels ang guest houses, a lot of fish restaurants and pubs, the casino.

In summer (July and August) the weather is very cold and rainy, so the city it's not at its best!
But you have just to drive 30 km out of the town, go inside the desert and immediately the sun shines and the temperature is warm!

Walvis Bay is the second town with 50,000 people.

It's just few km far from Swakopmund and has got the same clime and temperatures.

Southafricans took the control of the town after the Independence until 1994, because Walvis Bay has got a port, very important for Namibian trading.

Many flamingos live on the seaside. In a travel agency we arranged a day trip to Sandwich Harbour, the coastal part of the Namib desert.

Luderitz is very close to the Southafrican border and in August it's very cold. It's in the middle of the diamond area. 15 km from Luderitz there are the ruins of Kolmanskop, the first mine town in Namibia.

Luderitz is like a small piece of Germany in Africa. The elders speak German and every building is in Northeuropean style.

From Luderitz it's possible to visit by boat some islands with many pinguins; by car you can visit Diaz Point, the place where Bartolomeo Diaz reached Namibia in 1488.
